Style requirements for footnotes and end notes

The SBLHS author-title system is a short title footnoting system. This means that the first note referring to a given source should supply complete publication data, while subsequent notes to that source should use an abbreviated short title format. Thus, in contrast to some other systems, the multiple use of Latin abbreviations, such as op. cit. is avoided.

1.1 Footnotes

Footnotes should be indicated by a superscript numeral in the body of the essay. As far as practicable, the numeral should be placed at the end of a sentence and should follow any punctuation marks. Multiple footnotes within one sentence should be avoided. When several sources are cited in one sentence, only one footnote should be used and should include a reference for each source.
