There are a large number of archival and manuscript repositories in the UK. Many libraries hold archival or special collections of some kind and it is common for there to be separate access arrangements for researchers who wish to consult these materials. For detailed help on locating, accessing and using archives and manuscripts please look at the using archives and manuscripts section of this tutorial.

Here are some of the main electronic tools for locating and accessing relevant archives:

  • The Find an Archive page of the National Archives provides a Directory including contact details for record repositories in the UK and abroad which have substantial collections of manuscripts noted under the indexes to the National Register of Archives.
  • The Discovery Page contains information on the nature and location of manuscripts and historical records that relate to British history.
  • AIM25 is a major project to provide electronic access to collection level descriptions of the archives of over fifty higher education institutions and learned societies within the greater London area.
